Dear Choir Directors:

The Golden State Choral Competition has a mission to seek out and award choral excellence throughout the state of California. Since its inception in 1995, the competition has grown to encompass two geographical areas – North and South. Because the Golden State Competition can showcase up to twenty winning choirs in each of the two categories (Large Choirs - large groups of 33 or more, and Chamber Choirs – small groups of 32 or less) we are seeking new directors and schools to benefit from this great motivational tool and climb to new heights of the choral art.

As first place recipients at last year’s event, it is my pleasure to serve as host and extend an invitation to you to apply to the 2019 Golden State Choral Competition. This event will be held on Tuesday, April 30th from 12 pm to 9 pm. You will need to fill out the enclosed application and send us a recent recording of your group (MP3) which has one selection from last year (2017-18) and one selection from the previous school year (2016-17). There is also an entrance fee of $350 per choir upon acceptance, however there is NO FEE to apply!!!

This year’s competition promises to be a very exciting one! Our performance locations on the Pacific Union College campus in Angwin (Napa Valley) include the 350 seat Paulin Recital Hall (small choirs) and the 1600 seat college church sanctuary (large choirs and evening awards concert). Both of these locations have wonderful acoustics. There will also be four well-respected adjudicators judging each event. Following the event, directors will receive professional audio recordings of all of the performances from all 20 ensembles.

There is one REQUIRED PIECE for each for the two events (large choir and chamber choirs). Each choir also chooses two additional selections for their group to perform. These are usually from the traditional advanced high school/college level SATB choral repertoire. See required pieces here.

2. Send a recent recording of your group(s) to my email address

The application is due by November 1, 2018. Choirs who placed in the top five slots last year do NOT need to submit audition recordings, however, they must still submit an application and their entrance fees.

Because we only have room for 10 choirs in each division, I really need to hear from you immediately! The only way to secure a spot is to return your application and audition recordings ASAP. These will be reviewed by a select panel and you will be notified of the outcome by December, 2018.
